6 Day Red Centre Getaway

Upon your arrival into Alice Springs, make your own way to the Alice Springs Resort to check in. The rest of the day is free to explore the town centre at your leisure, or you could join the Alice Wanderer (at your own expense), an unescorted town tour visiting all of the major highlights including the Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air.

Overnight: Alice Springs Resort – Standard Guest Room

Avoiding the crowds, we travel along Larapinta Drive to Wallace Rockhole, a local Aboriginal Community where we join the rock art tour. Enjoy lunch enroute before we explore Gosse Bluff otherwise known as Tnorala, a comet impact crater that is 130 million years old.

Further to the south we cross through Katapata Gap and the Mereenie Wilderness Area to the top of the jump-up, where we have an uninterrupted view of the George Gill Range and Carmichaels’ Crag.

Overnight: Kings Canyon Resort – Standard Guest Room

We start the day with a climb to the rim of Kings Canyon where we explore the Garden of Eden and wonder at the exquisite environment of the George Gill Range. Enroute through vast cattle stations to Yulara we stop at Mt Connor Lookout (often mistaken for Ayers Rock).

After lunch we visit the Uluru - Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, before an informative base tour of Ayers Rock (Uluru), including Mutitjulu and Kantju Gorge before enjoying a champagne sunset overlooking Uluru.

Up bright and early we head west to explore The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) in the serenity of the cool morning air, returning to Yulara in time to explore the resort before lunch (at your own expense). Lunch time sees our departure from the resort for our return journey to Alice Springs.

Day 5 takes us on an adventure to visit the Finke Gorge National Park and Palm Valley. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along Palm Creek absorbing the ambience of this desert oasis. A more vigorous option is a climb to the top of the valley walls. Cycad Gorge offers an impressive cliff display of these rare plants while Kalarranga Lookout affords an impressive view of the amphitheatre, a site of significance for the local Aranda Tribe.

Hermannsburg is our next stop, where it is time to explore this historical mission and stroll amongst the buildings in awe at the achievements in a hostile environment. Tour the gallery of the famous water colour artists of Hermannsburg. View the works of the father of this watercolour art style Albert Namatjira. Purchase genuine works of art and artefacts of the sons and daughters of Hermannsburg. We then return to Alice Springs in the late afternoon.

A day of spectacular mountain scenery, wildlife and waterholes. Come with us to visit Flynn’s Grave, view the Twin Gums painted by Albert Namatjira, a famous Aboriginal water colour artist and explore the Standley Chasm, a rare geological formation of two opposing red rock faces.

We will also see the Ochre Pits, which are a significant traditional source of ochre for ceremonies and gain a panoramic view of the beginning of one of the oldest rivers in the world at the Finke River Lookout. Swim in an outback waterhole at Ellery Creek and explore Ormiston Gorge, a permanent waterhole set amongst deep ravines and peaked mountains before returning to the Alice.
